- Who is eligible for the SMART Energy Grant?
Answer: Effective July 01, 2025 the NHT will make the Smart Energy Grant available to both public and private sector pensioners who satisfy the eligibility criteria. The grant must be used to install solar panel energy saving systems on the pensioner’s home.
- What are the eligible criteria to access the Smart Energy Grant?
Answer: To access the SMART Grant, you must satisfy the following criteria:
- A retired Public or Private Sector Pensioner who at the time of retirement was earning less than $30,000.99 weekly;
- Must be a homeowner (this includes owners of non-NHT constructed or mortgaged properties);
- Must be 60 years or older;
- Must not have already installed similar systems.
- How much is the Grant?
Answer: The SMART Energy Grant is for a maximum of $1.5 million per beneficiary.
- Can two persons in a household be selected for the Grant?
Answer: Only one member per household will be awarded a grant.
- How many SMART Energy Grants are available?
Answer: The NHT will make available a total of 420 grants per year. Thirty (30) beneficiaries will be selected per parish.
- How do I apply for a SMART Energy Grant?
Answer: The intake period for applications will be advertised in the media (i.e. radio & television); at that time, interested persons will be invited to apply.
- How will beneficiaries be selected?
Answer: Applicants will be initially selected based on their income at retirement and years of contribution to the Trust. In addition, site visits and case reports conducted by the NHT’s Social Development Team will be used to confirm selection.
- If I already accessed a loan from the NHT; can I still get a SMART Energy Grant?
Answer: Yes. You may still access a SMART Energy Grant if you have already accessed any NHT loan facility. This includes Open Market, Scheme, 10 Plus or Home Improvement loans.
- How will the grant be disbursed?
Answer: The grant will be disbursed in two (2) tranches. The second tranche will be disbursed following a site visit.
- Can the grant be used to install air condition systems?
Answer: No. The grant shall only be used for installing solar panel energy saving systems.
- Can this benefit be accessed by previous home grants recipients?
Answer: Yes. You will be able to access this grant once you are a public or private sector pensioner earning less than $30,000.99 per week at the time of retirement.
- Will the pensioner be able to access their total refunds under this grant?
Answer: Yes. You will be able to do so.
